Hello friends...
Study Smarter not Harder...
Do we learn 4 chapters in a day if we have examinations on the upcoming day?
We always thinks that there is whole day and it is sufficient to complete all 4 chapters in 4 hours. So we usually plan to see movie else chatting with friends and spent whole day as it is. Later, at night we spend 4 hours together to complete the chapters so that we could write something in the examination paper.
Now, think a little bit before answer.
Which option will be better to complete all the 4 chapters?
a. To read and complete all chapters in 4 hours at a time and give the examination next day.
b. to make complete all four chapters with 1 hour study and in study gap of our own choice.
Is it necessary to study in a fixed routine and with a fixed study environment? Else do we read and study how we feel and wherever we feel comfortable?
Is there any direct connection of sleep with our memory power?
When should we study, which time is good for studies- night or day or early morning?
Else getting distracted during our studies id beneficial or worst case for our studies?
All these answers could be find here. I am going to share some thoughts about the studies from "Benedict's Book"- "How We Learn".
"How We Learn" focuses on- smart study instead of hard study. I am going to discuss some of the points which would be really beneficial for all students as we all need to learn and prepare for examinations.
SMART IDEA 1: Spacing Effect & Distributed Learning
Water uour brain regularly. Treat your brain as a plant. As plant needs to be showered with water daily means at regular intervals so to make them to feel fresh and energetic to bloom flowers. Running 3 miles at a time and skipping for another 2 days will not work on our health instead we need to run daily for 1 mile without failing to maintain consistency.
In the same manner, our brain do need the same care as our health and the plant. I mean to say that making oneself to complete the all 4 chapters at a time is too boring and make our brain to distract from the study. It is better to choose the other option that is to bifurcate the chapters and study them in intervals.
This is known as Spacing Effect & Distributed Learning. Scientifically, it has been proved that whenever, we watch movie we remember more of starting and ending compare to the middle portion of the movie. This is because that movie is a big session and our concentration is at par in starting and the ending of any session. It is minimal in the middle of the session so session should be small. It means we should study for 1 hour and then we need to take a break.
We all have the tendency to learn and forget. When we take a break and try to recall the things, some of it we forget completely. And such type of recalling makes our brain to churn hard and recall which enhance our memory power. And in this way, the things which we forget and recall at intervals, it will get stored in our brain forever and it will get stored forever.
SMART IDEA 2: Untested Fluency Is An Illusion
Many times it happens that one topic we read and think that it got understand easily so we can memories it long time. And we switch to some other topic to study. but in this manner, we we read topics and recall it in examination; we are unable to recall the things. This is what we call "Fluency Illusion". When the topic is in front of our eyes, it got eluded in eyes that it got learnt by me but in reality, it is not done. To curtail such instance, we need to read one topic for one time and recall it for thrice to make it memories forever.
This could be done by 20 80 rule. It is 20% of reading and 80% of recite to fit it perfectly in the memory.
SMART IDEA 3: Change Is Good
From our childhood, we got lessons from our parents that to make a fix time for reading and should not skip that time to study in that fixed timezone. But reality is far from this prescribed rule i.e., according to scientific research, there was 2 groups A & B. Group A was given a task to learn 50 words in a specific room. And Group B was assigned with same task but they were given space to change there room. So could you guess what was the result?
Group A on an average, learnt 16 words out of 50 and Group B learnt 24 out of 50 words.
SMART IDEA 4: Test Teach & Mix
Whenever we read any topic we forget, we need to test oneself once we have completed the topic. It means after reading a chapter, ask as many possible questions as you can and justify yourself that did you get all the answers what you had studied few minutes before. if you are satisfied with your consent then you move to the next lesson. Secondly, we need to teach, make your friends, siblings understand and explain the things which we have learnt. This will help you a lot to memories easily. Thirdly, you have seen miscellaneous questions means we need to solve different questions of different topics at a time to judge whether the topics we have learnt got in our memory or we have just satisfied our self that we have learnt all the things.
SMART IDEA 5: Sleep & Nap
Scientist researched between 2 groups where both the groups were asked to learn the same topic. One group was asked to take a nap and other group was prohibited to take the nap. The group which napped has performed tremendously well than the other group. This is because taking a nap after studying make the memory to synchronize the data from sub conscious mind to permanent memory. Even we have felt fresh & better when we get up after a sleep. So taking a nap in a day time is not a bad idea, even it is good for our memory.
Secondly, best time to take sleep is between 11 PM to 7 AM in the morning but if your internal machine has changed the way to sleep at this time so it does not matter what time (till day hour or late nights) you are sleeping. And even you can study whenever your mind is fresh and get up from a good sleep.
SMART IDEA 6: Zigernick Effect
In 20th centuary, there was scientist named Bluma Zigernick researched that a waiter in a restaurant pay more attention to a table which did not paid their bill than the table which already cleared their bill. In similar way, he has compared it with our brain that our brain keeps more focus on the uncompleted task that the completed task. For instance, we can assume that during our examination where we need to mug up all the things so that our subconscious mind keep all the memories of mugged items till the examination is over.As soon the examination is over, our mind forget all the mugged items as it knows that the task of examination get completed and we do not need to keep all the mugged items in our memory. So taking a break in between the study hour makes our brain to avoid the distraction and make our memory to synchronize the mugging items in the brain permanently.
